USA TODAY—In a perfect world, schools would have in-school mental health professionals, but resource officers like me have an important role too.

The issue of militarized schools raised in the Black Lives Matter movement has prompted the Allentown and Bethlehem school districts to reconsider police officers in schools. School resource officers gained popularity after the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado and even more schools added them after the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
