Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is preparing the company to be leaner, but a new push for efficiency risks squeezing employees more than ever.

Microsoft has laid off 559 workers from their Bellevue and Redmond operations as of Monday, according to the Washington State Employment Security Department.

Amazon will be eliminating roles in its cloud computing unit, human resources division, advertising and Twitch, CEO Andy Jassy said Monday.      

The job cuts would mark the second largest round of layoffs in the company's history, adding to the 18,000 employees the tech giant said it would lay off in January.

Tech CEOs like Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Google's Sundar Pichai have admitted that overhiring during the pandemic is partly to blame for layoffs now.
